This is a song of forbidden, fragile love, and it lives almost entirely through the image of a flower. The beloved is a “seven-petalled flower,” hathpethi mala, rare and perfect, who “sought me out” even “without a whole blossoming season,” meaning their love came suddenly, out of its proper time. He calls her a “forbidden lady,” thahanam anganaava, and asks the ache at the song’s centre: if this love is not allowed, “why did you draw near?”

The flower imagery deepens into something bittersweet. He confesses to “asking for one of the seven petals” and “secretly savouring a breath of its fragrance,” a stolen, tender closeness, and then wonders whether the nectar seemed so sweet only “because you, too, are close to withering,” because the love is fading and doomed. There is a lovely, sad gesture where he asks her to “hide yourself in a flower petal for me” and let the wind carry it away, as if to keep a trace of her once she is gone.

The final verses are pure devotion in the face of loss. Even though she “bloomed far beyond reach,” he decides “I need nothing more,” and vows the thing every faithful heart vows: “apart from you, I will know no other flower’s fragrance.” She remains a “rainbow flower at the edge of the black sky,” beautiful, distant, belonging to no one he can name, and though he whispered “that it was mine,” she keeps returning “as if she had never heard.” What the listener is left with is the tender helplessness of loving someone forbidden and fleeting, holding on to a single petal’s scent because it is all he will ever be allowed to keep.
