This is a hymn of thanksgiving for healing, and it has the plain, glad directness of someone testifying to something real that happened to them. The refrain gives two simple reasons for its praise: “because you are my God, I praise you always,” and “because you made me well, I give you thanks always.” Worship here is not abstract; it flows straight from gratitude for a healing received, and the singer promises to keep it up “as long as I have life.”

The second verse tells the story behind the thanks. “That day, when I lay ill, I wept, all alone,” a memory of sickness and isolation that many will recognize. And it makes a striking claim about that low point: “there was no one in this world who could make me well.” Human help had reached its limit; the situation was beyond ordinary cure.

Into that helplessness the singer places his faith: “I believe it, Jesus, you were there beside me. It was you who made me well.” The healing is credited entirely to God, and, tellingly, so is the reason for it, “love, always love.” What the listener is left with is the warmth of a grateful testimony, an ordinary believer who was sick and alone, who found no help in the world, and who is convinced that the God who loves him drew near and made him whole, and who now cannot stop singing his thanks.
