This is a song about a bond so deep that distance cannot break it. It is addressed to someone who could not come along, and the singer opens with tenderness for their pain: “I know your heart aches that you cannot come with me.” But rather than dwell on the parting, she finds the absent one everywhere, “the marks of me lie in every place,” and on the long road ahead the loved one “falls beside me like a shadow.” The road they always walked together, she still feels they are walking together.

The middle verse transforms past suffering into sweetness. The “hardships we bore” now “taste sweet,” and their feet, “once torn by thorns,” she knows are “soft as a flower,” pain remembered as tenderness. Having climbed the mountain together, she can look back at all the beauty below. Then comes the line that lifts the whole song beyond one lifetime: “even at the end of a journey through samsara, I know we will go together.” This is love promised across rebirths, the deepest vow in the Sinhala imagination.

The final verse holds the paradox at the song’s heart. Even “on a journey I travel alone,” she thinks of the two of them going together, because they are “bound by a single cord,” and it is “the heart alone, never decaying,” that keeps measuring each further step. What the listener is left with is a quietly profound picture of companionship: two people who cannot always walk side by side, yet whose hearts are tied together so firmly that neither distance, nor hardship, nor even the long road of samsara can make them truly separate.
