A wistful song of carrying a lost love through everyday life like a keepsake taken out and put away. Weeping, never stopping, on the journey, the singer walks along cradling the memory I gathered up; and the refrain describes exactly what he does with it, I bring it out, I unfold it, and I close it away again. Grief handled like a folded letter, opened and refolded.

The middle remembers the wordless intimacy. Beside her mute heart, in silence, was the wonder we spoke, eye to eye, a whole conversation held only in glances. He recalls it, thinks it over, and keeps it hidden; love is such a wonder, he says, and once more closes it and keeps it away.

The close names the place. The city where you and I met, where the days ran out and even their shadows slipped from us and hid, is now somewhere he moves through alone, walking, stopping, resting. He calls it the city of love, and there too he folds the memory shut and keeps it.
