It must be hidden away, unwritten,
this pain that keeps stabbing, hurting the heart,
it cannot be written down and announced,
and love, too, is just like you
Taking slow steps, I lift them gently,
in among the weeping willow trees,
on a known, familiar road, like a stranger,
that is you, I doubt it, I stop,
and instantly, I do not look back
On a day the sun falls to its knees,
the heart turned to stone, o moon,
then, in the darkness that follows,
what you call the pitch-black night,
can you carry it away, for a moment?,
what I call it is the past in which you existed

Atheethaya Song Meaning and Interpretation
A restrained, melancholy song about a pain too deep to speak. The stabbing hurt in the heart, the singer says, must be hidden away, unwritten; it cannot be written down and announced to anyone. And in a quiet, cutting line, love, too, is just like you, unspeakable, kept hidden, impossible to put into words.
The middle is a near-encounter. Walking slowly in among the weeping willow trees, on a road she knows well yet moves along like a stranger, she thinks she glimpses the other person, that is you, doubts it, stops, and instantly refuses to look back. The whole verse is the discipline of not turning around, of not reopening what is closed.
The close reframes grief itself. On a day the sun falls to its knees and the heart has turned to stone, in the darkness that follows, what the other person simply calls the pitch-black night, she calls something else entirely: the past in which you existed. The same darkness is, for her, the whole vanished time when the loved one was still there. Sung by Eshanie Madhurika Suriyaarachchi to words by Chathurika Vinodi Perera, composed by Tharindu Damsara, it is a quiet, aching song about carrying an unspeakable love, and seeing, in the ordinary dark, the lost past where someone used to be.
