Sandyawa Lyrics

Sandyaawa thawa e waagemayi
Sheshawenawaa pamanayi
Mathakayan hawasak waagemayi
Hudakalaawe mumunayi
Danata soduriya epamanayi

Widaapath wuu rayaka madiyama
Pahan kanu nidiwarayi
Prema awanadu aithi illaa
Rahayi karadara karayi
Adura kandan raathriya
Paminenne e hindayi

Aluyame mudu seetha piniyata

Hiru awith pini bidaka aayusha
Ganama awitili karayi
Seda sarayati athath nathuwath
Lokayama andayi
Danata soduriya epamanayi

Sandyawa Lyrics English Translation

The dusk is still just the same,
only, it is left behind as a remnant,
memories, too, are like an evening,
murmuring away in solitude,
for now, my darling, that is all

In the midnight of a weary night,
the lamp-post stays awake, sleepless,
demanding the rights of love’s dispute,
the cricket makes its trouble,
the night comes leading the dark along,
and that is exactly why,
for now, my darling, that is all

In the soft, cold dew of dawn,
the flower petals grow heavy,
the sun arrives and pleads
for the whole lifespan of a dewdrop,
whether it holds a silken whip or not,
it blinds the entire world,
for now, my darling, that is all

Sandyawa Song Meaning and Interpretation

A quiet, atmospheric song that measures loneliness by the hour, from dusk to dawn. The evening, the singer says, is still just the same, except that now it is only left behind as a remnant; and memories, too, are like an evening, murmuring softly in solitude. The refrain that closes each verse, for now, my darling, that is all, has the sound of someone who has run out of everything except the routine of missing someone.

The middle is deep night. At the midnight of a weary night, the lamp-post stays awake, sleepless; a cricket keeps chirping as if demanding the rights of love’s dispute; and the night arrives leading the dark along. Everything in the darkness is restless and unresolved, and that, he says, is simply why the night is the way it is.

The close reaches dawn, and even that brings no relief. In the cold dew, the flower petals grow heavy; the sun rises and can only plead for the whole lifespan of a dewdrop, life so brief it lasts only until the dew dries; and, silken whip or not, the sun blinds the entire world. Round the clock, the loneliness holds. Sung by Himansa Samarakoon to words by Ruhunuketha Dhammadewa Thero, composed by Tharindu Damsara, it is a hushed, elegiac song about solitude that stretches from dusk through midnight to dawn, and a love that is now only memory.
