The beginning is the Lord,
the end is the Lord
apart from you, for us,
there is no life at all
Our strength is the Lord,
our power is the Lord
apart from you, for us,
there is no life at all
Our vigour is the Lord,
our journey is the Lord
apart from you, for us,
there is no life at all
Our pathway is the Lord,
our very life is the Lord
apart from you, for us,
there is no life at all

Arambaya Samidunve Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a hymn of total dependence on God, built with the simple, hammering repetition of a creed. Its opening lines take one of the great names God gives himself in the book of Revelation, the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last: “the beginning is the Lord, the end is the Lord.” God is where everything starts and where everything is heading, and the refrain that follows every verse draws the only possible conclusion, “apart from you, for us, there is no life at all.”
The song then works through everything a person relies on to live, and hands each one back to God. “Our strength is the Lord, our power is the Lord”; “our vigour is the Lord, our journey is the Lord”; “our pathway is the Lord, our very life is the Lord.” Line by line it refuses to locate life’s source anywhere in itself. Strength, energy, direction, the road ahead, even life itself, none of it is the singer’s own; all of it is God.
The power of the hymn is in its plainness. It makes no clever argument; it simply keeps saying the same thing in different words until the truth settles in, that God is the beginning and the end, the strength and the way, and that “apart from you there is no life at all.” What the listener is left with is the bedrock of faith stated as simply as possible, a whole life confessing that it neither began itself nor sustains itself nor knows where it is going, except in God, who is its first, its last, and its everything in between.
