Aruna Lian (also spelled Arun Lian and Aruna Liyan, අරුණ ලියන්) is a Sri Lankan singer, guitarist, composer, and producer, best known as a founding member and lead guitarist of the group Jaya Sri and for solo recordings such as Hada Salena.
Aruna Lian grew up in southern Sri Lanka, later moving to Kandy for his studies and then to Colombo to pursue music before relocating to Germany. He performed with bands in Sri Lanka and Europe, and was a founding member of Jaya Sri, the reggae and pop group that became one of the more recognisable Sinhala acts of the 2000s.
Within Jaya Sri, Lian served as lead guitarist and was closely involved in writing and producing much of the group’s early material. His contribution to that catalogue, and the ownership of those songs, later became the subject of a public dispute after he left the group, a matter that has been raised in court in Sri Lanka. He continued to record and release music under his own name after the split.
Lian’s solo catalogue centres on the 2008 release Hada Salena, which also circulated in remix form, and on later singles including Land of Sunshine Sri Lanka, Ginigath Hadawath, Yawwana Sihina Lokaye, and Rosa Kopul. His style blends Sri Lankan melody with the reggae and pop influences he absorbed playing live across Europe.
Lyrics-lk hosts several of Aruna Liyan’s recordings, including remakes of well-known songs alongside his own material. The site features the following tracks:
Each page presents the Sinhala lyrics with an English transliteration and translation, which is useful for diaspora listeners who follow Arun Lian’s work but read the words more easily in Latin script.
