Mercy Edirisinghe (මර්සි එදිරිසිංහ), born Donna Mercy Nalini Edirisinghe, was a Sri Lankan singer, stage and screen actress, and comedian whose voice and comic timing made her a familiar presence on radio, the dramatic stage, and television from the mid 1960s onward. She was born on 18 December 1945 in Ambepussa and died on 17 March 2014 in Gampaha.
Mercy Edirisinghe began performing in 1964 and broke through with the 1966 musical play Tharavo Igilethi by Lucien Bulathsinhala. Her best known song, “Made Lagina Tharawan” (මඩේ ලඟින තාරාවන්), came from that production and was composed by Gunadasa Kapuge. It remains her most enduring single. She also recorded the much loved “Watakara Bamara Rana”, sometimes listed as Mala Watakara Bambara Rena.
Beyond music she was an “A” grade radio dramatist and won Best Actress at the State Drama Festival in 1974, 1975, and 1976. Wider audiences knew her from the comedy series Vinoda Samaya, performing alongside Annesley Dias, Berty Gunathilake, and Samuel Rodrigo.
