Walter Fernando (වෝල්ටර් ප්රනාන්දු) is a Sri Lankan baila singer, best known for lively novelty numbers such as Pulli Gona and Ha Ha Hadai Roope. He is the brother of the celebrated baila vocalist M. S. Fernando, known as the “Baila Chakrawarthi”, and worked within the same upbeat, rhythm-driven tradition.
Walter Fernando sings in the baila style that dominated Sri Lankan party and stage music for decades, a sound built on fast 6/8 rhythms, playful lyrics, and call-and-response energy. His recordings circulate widely on Sinhala music platforms, where Pulli Gona (also catalogued as “Pulli Gona Purudu Karaya”) remains one of his most requested tracks.
His duet Ha Ha Hadai Roope, also written as Ha Ha Hadai Rupe, features Anjalin Gunathilaka and is associated with the comedy production Hatharadenama Soorayo. It is a comic, character-driven piece typical of the playful baila repertoire.
Lyrics-lk presents these songs with the original Sinhala script alongside English transliteration (Singlish) and translation, so the wordplay that drives baila comedy stays readable for Sinhala listeners and the diaspora alike.
Every Sinhala lyric, composition, and song credit by Walter Fernando.
