Someday

A young man has been left behind by the one he loved, and this song is him talking to her after she has gone to someone else. He starts with a small, sharp memory: out of a whole crowd, his eyes found hers, the eyes he knew, and he passed everyone else by. That is how love begins here, with one look that singles out one person. The ache is that the same person who once had only him now belongs to somebody else, and the dream of love they were building has been left unfinished.

The heart of the song is not anger but a quiet, wounded faith. He keeps coming back to one line, “someday you will hurt,” and to him that is not a curse, it is almost a hope. He believes that one day she will feel what he felt, and in that moment she will finally understand how much he loved her. He even tells himself it will come soon. The imagery is plain but it carries weight. He speaks of being caught in a storm of tears, the grief coming over him all at once like weather he cannot stop. When he says the dreams in his heart turned hollow, he means the future they planned together is now an empty shell, the shape is there but nothing is inside it. The line that lands hardest for a Sinhala listener is the one about lifetimes. In the Buddhist idea of saṃsāra, the cycle of rebirth, lovers are often said to have been together across many births, so when he says “after lifetimes together, this is how we came apart,” he is saying their bond was meant to be eternal, and that makes the breakup feel like something far larger than one lost relationship.

By the end he is no longer asking why, he is pleading with her to remember. No one in this world loves the way he does, so why was he the one deceived? He carries pain that was never his to carry, and the years go by without him even noticing. His last request is small and human: just remember that he was the first person you ever loved. Then he returns to “someday,” still waiting, still sure that one day she will understand what she let go.
