A woman is singing to the person she loves, and the whole song is one quiet promise: whatever this life brings me, I will carry it so that you don’t have to. She doesn’t pretend life has been easy. She speaks of a life she was simply handed, lived among people who cause pain, and of troubles that keep arriving one after another. But the refrain she returns to is that as long as they hold on to their dreams together, none of it can break them.

The tenderness sits in the small promises of the second half. She says that in the very moment she feels like crying, when the tears are already rising to her eyes, she gives him her smile instead and wipes the tears from his eyes first. Her own pain goes unspoken so that his can be eased. It is the kind of love that protects the other person even at its own cost.

Two images carry the feeling. Love measured “like the strings of a veena” reaches for a classical Sinhala picture of harmony: a veena only sings when each string is tuned in balance with the others, so she is saying their love is something delicate that has to be kept in tune, and when it is, it makes music. The “flower bud opening into bloom” is the gentler, hopeful counterpart, love that is still young and slowly unfolding, with its best still ahead.

The song closes on the line that holds everything else up. She speaks of “thun sitha,” the three minds, an old way of saying the entire heart, every part of who she is, and she hands all of it over. “My life is you, only you.” After all the talk of hardship and held-back tears, that is what she is left holding, and what she leaves with him: not a complaint about how hard the road is, but a vow to walk it for his sake.
