Maya Damayanthi (මායා දමයන්ති), also written Maya Damayanthi Perera, is a Sri Lankan playback and stage singer who came up through the Sinhala film and radio scene of the 1970s. She is remembered for warm, melodic duets and playback numbers, and on Lyrics-lk she appears on songs such as Idda Mal Kathawe.
Maya Damayanthi entered the music field during the 1970s and built a long career as a playback singer for cinema and as a recording and concert artist. In October 2019 she marked 45 years in music with a concert at Colombo’s Elphinstone Theatre, billed as “Maya Damayanthi Live in Concert,” which dates her start to roughly the mid-1970s. Among the songs associated with her are “Oba Mage Wela” and “Kurullo Numbe Thale,” along with stage favourites like “Sara Mal” and “Katakaranam.”
She is married to fellow playback singer Victor Vijayantha (Victor Wijayantha Perera), and the two performed together across film and stage. Their daughter is the pop and R&B singer Kushani Sandarekha, who began as a child playback singer and went on to work across many films, making the household a three-generation music family. On the duet Idda Mal Kathawe she is paired with the playback star H. R. Jothipala.
Beyond performing, Maya Damayanthi Perera teaches the next generation: she runs the Rekha Sangeet Ashram in Kohuwala together with her husband Victor Vijayantha and daughter Kushani, offering vocal and dance training to aspiring singers. Each page on Lyrics-lk presents her songs in the original Sinhala script with English transliteration and translation, so listeners can follow both the words and their meaning.
