Ranil Mallawarachchi (රනිල් මල්ලවආරච්චි, also spelled Ranil Mallawarachi) is a Sri Lankan singer and the eldest son of the late Milton Mallawarachchi, one of the most loved voices in Sinhala popular music. He is known both for carrying forward his father’s songs and for his own recordings, and audiences often remark on how closely his tone resembles his father’s.
Mallawarachchi grew up in a household built around music. He was educated at Nalanda College, Colombo, where he was also a keen sportsman before turning to singing as a career. He took formal vocal guidance from senior musicians including Nanda Malini and Edward Jayakody, and in his early years he travelled with his father on stage, learning the songs and the performing craft directly from him.
His public breakthrough came in 1996 with Me Lowa Gamburui, a song he recorded together with his father for his first album. After Milton Mallawarachchi’s death in 1998, Ranil Mallawarachchi increasingly performed and re-recorded his father’s catalogue alongside his own material, and he has released a long run of albums over the following decades. He performs regularly for Sri Lankan audiences abroad, including in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and France.
The Mallawarachchi name now spans three generations of singers, with Ranil Mallawarachchi’s own son also performing the family songs. For many listeners, his work keeps Milton Mallawarachchi’s melodies in circulation while giving them a living voice. Lyrics-lk hosts his recordings with Sinhala lyrics and English translation, so the meaning carries for both Sri Lankan and diaspora listeners searching for Ranil Mallawarachchi songs.
