Hanthane Lyrics
Hanthane kandu muduna sisara
Pavanak vi ennan
Obe suwada randi kutiya samipe
Kusumak vi innam//
Thun mahalin sadi sarasavi paeye
Mal ketayam sewane
Siri poda wesse negunu sathutu rala
Miringu sayura vini atheethaye//
Hanthane...
Palu nisansala kaduweti athare
Mahaweli gan iwure
Athatu sindagath vihanga vilasen
Ape pathum iki bindinu ase//
Hanthane...
Hanthane Lyrics English Translation
Circling the peak of the Hanthana hills,
I’ll come as a breeze.
Your fragrance lingers near the room,
so I’ll stay there as a flower.
The university glowed, built in three storeys,
in the shade of carved flowers.
The waves of joy that rose in the rain on Siri Po day
became a sea of mirage in the past.
Hanthana…
Among the lonely, silent ranges of hills,
on the bank of the Mahaweli river,
like a bird with its wings clipped,
our hopes can be heard sobbing.
Hanthana…

Hanthane Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is one of Amaradeva’s tender songs of memory, and to feel it you need to know the place. Hanthana is the line of hills that rises behind the University of Peradeniya near Kandy, the old campus where the Mahaweli river runs along its edge. For generations of Sri Lankans, Hanthana is shorthand for student days: the green hills, the gowned buildings, first friendships and first love, a whole season of life lived in the cool air below those peaks. The song is the voice of someone looking back on those years from far away, aching to return to them.
He doesn’t ask to go back as himself. He asks to return as a breeze that circles the mountain top, and as a flower that stays near a particular room because her fragrance still lingers there. That is the heart of it. He can no longer walk those grounds in person, so in his longing he imagines slipping back in the gentlest forms he can, air and a blossom, just to be near the place and the girl who made it home. The “fragrance” is her memory still hanging in the air of that room long after she has gone.
Then the memory itself rises. He pictures the campus glowing, its three-storey halls and the stone flowers carved into the old architecture, and the bursting happiness of Siri Po day, a poya full day on campus when rain fell and joy rose in waves. But he catches himself: all that gladness, looked at now, has turned into a “sea of mirage,” a shimmer of water on the horizon that isn’t really there. The university days were real once, yet from this distance they feel like something beautiful you reach for and never touch, the way heat-haze fakes a lake on a far road.
The last verse is where the ache settles. Among the still, empty hills and along the Mahaweli’s bank, he says our hopes are like a bird whose wings have been cut, and he can hear them sobbing. The dreams they all carried as students, of the lives they would build, of staying close, have been clipped of their flight. What’s left is a quiet grief in a place that no longer holds them. The song leaves you with that double feeling so many of us know: love for the years that shaped us, and the soft pain that they are gone and only come back now as breeze, fragrance, and memory.
