A man stands in the Hanthana hills and can’t stop the tears, because everywhere he looks he sees a love he has lost. Hanthana is the mountain range above the University of Peradeniya, and for generations of Sri Lankans it carries one meaning above all: young love, the romance of student days, mist and cool air and someone you walked those slopes with. So when he calls this a “Hanthana dream,” he isn’t only naming a place. He is naming a whole season of his life, a love that lived here and then slipped away, and that now comes back to him only as a dream he can’t quite hold.

The grief deepens when he calls it a saṃsāra dream, the dream of many lifetimes. In Buddhist thought saṃsāra is the long wheel of birth and death we keep turning on. By placing his love inside it, he is saying this isn’t a small heartbreak you get over in a season. It feels older than this life, a longing that has followed him across births and may follow him into the next. That single word lifts the whole song from a campus romance into something close to a vow.

The middle verse is the memory itself. He pictures the rain falling in fine drops, “pearls of rain,” and the two of them in the middle of a dancing circle, her arms folded around him. Then the image turns: that beautiful, living scene is a stage that has gone dark and left the stage empty. He begs her not to dissolve into the new-moon night, the amavaka, the darkest, moonless dark there is. In Sinhala song the moon is the face of the beloved, the gentle light you steer by; a moonless night is her absence, total and unlit. He is pleading with the memory not to fade out completely and leave him with nothing.

So he makes a quiet promise to wait. Until she comes back he will keep his distance from the moon, sit in the faint light of the stars, and listen to old love songs. He will go on entering that moonlit dream and sit beside her there, in the Hanthana wilds, because the dream is the only place left where she still exists. The song ends not in despair but in a tender, patient ache, a man who has decided that if he cannot have her in life, he will keep their love alive in dream and in song, and wait.
