A young man is with the woman he loves on a quiet night, and the whole world seems to lean in to share the moment with them. He imagines the moon slipping out from behind a thin veil of cloud, peeking down again and again, the way a shy onlooker steals glances, and quietly eavesdropping on the soft, sweet things the two of them are saying to each other. That repeated word for “in secret” gives the moon a tender, almost mischievous warmth, as if even the sky cannot resist their love.

From there the feeling turns inward and grows stronger. Tears spill into the moonlight that washes over the trees and the climbing vines, and a chill with no end runs through his whole body, the kind of trembling that comes when love is so intense it almost hurts. He says he is pleading with her eyes, in a “wild madness,” and that is the honest pitch of the song. This is not calm affection. It is the dizzy, overwhelmed feeling of wanting someone so much that you can barely hold yourself together.

The second verse leans on a small, very Sri Lankan image to carry that same heat. The kiyambu is a delicate flowering creeper, and he pictures its tendrils coming loose and swaying in the breeze that she stirs as she moves, brushing against her cheeks. It is a gentle, sensual picture, the soft vine touching her face the way he longs to, and just imagining it sends his thoughts spinning. So he asks her to cool him, to calm the fever she has lit in him, with the coolness that is hers alone. In Sinhala song, coolness (sisilasa) is the answer to burning, the relief after the ache, so he is really asking her closeness to settle the storm she herself has caused.

What you are left holding is the contrast at the heart of it. Outside, the night is hushed and cool and the moon watches kindly, but inside him everything is trembling and on fire. With Amaradeva’s voice carrying Kularathna Ariyawansa’s tender words, the song captures that breathless edge of love where you are undone by the very person you turn to for peace.
