Asanka Sahabandu (also spelled Asanka Sahabandhu) is a Sri Lankan entertainer who works as a singer, radio DJ, and actor, known in Colombo’s event scene as “The Party Starter.” He reaches a wide audience through upbeat singles and playful covers that recast popular international songs for a Sinhala listener.
Sahabandu’s first viral success was “Good Morning Maala”, a comic single that drew on his radio personality and pushed him into the entertainment mainstream. From there he became a regular fixture at corporate functions and private ceremonies, and in 2013 he served as the main host of the CHOGM opening ceremony in Colombo, an event attended by Charles, then Prince of Wales.
Alongside music and broadcasting, he is widely recognised for the stage: from 2008 he played Minister Sunil Bailachakrawarthees in the long-running satirical comedy Puswedilla, a role he held across several years of the production.
His best-known recordings mix dance-floor energy with humour. The duet “Samanaliya”, made with Kaizer Kaiz, remains one of his most-streamed tracks, and his localised take on a global rock anthem, “We Are The Champions (Roda Banda Rock Wela),” is typical of the Lankan-flavoured covers that built his name. Asanka Sahabandhu also writes and composes, as on the single “Kalu Kolla.”
