Dtaps (also written D-Tap, D’Tap or D Tap) is a Sri Lankan music group from Matara, formed by students of Rahula College in the mid-2000s and known for radio-friendly Sinhala songs that blend pop melody with hip hop and rap. The group reached a wide audience with tracks such as Neth Konin and Pembari.
The group grew out of Rahula College, Matara, where Tharindu and a small circle of schoolmates began performing western and hip hop influenced music. Accounts differ on the exact starting point, placing the group’s beginnings between 2002 and 2005, with an early lineup of four members. Dayan Aravinda took the role of lead vocalist, rapper and lyricist, while Tharindu Roshan handled vocals, composition and production. Pramudith Thenabadu and Dimuthu Nagoda rounded out the original group, with Dimuthu writing several early lyrics.
Dtaps broke through on Sri Lankan radio in the mid-2000s. By 2006 the group placed three singles in the top ten of the Y FM chart, and their music videos held high positions on hit charts across 2006 and 2007. Their sound, a mix of sung Sinhala hooks and rapped verses, set them apart from the more traditional pop acts of the period and gave them a following among younger listeners. The group later gathered its work on the album Landu (2012).
The group is most closely associated with Neth Konin, a song that pairs a soft melodic chorus with rap passages and remains the track listeners most often connect to the D-Tap name. Mage Adara Landu (මගේ ආදර ළන්දු) and Landu are also widely circulated, the latter sharing its title with the group’s album.
