Lakmini Udawatta (also spelled Lakmini Udawaththa, ලක්මිණි උඩවත්ත) is a Sri Lankan playback and stage singer, classically trained in Hindustani music, who is widely heard on Sinhala teledrama theme songs. Her full name is Lakmini Geethanjali Udawatta.
She was born in 1981 in Piliyandala to Kithsiri and Swarnapali Udawatta, both teachers. Her singing was noticed in childhood, and from age twelve she won the Education Ministry’s all-island singing competition, a result she repeated across several consecutive years in the 1990s. She went on to take a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and later a master’s degree in Hindustani music from the University of Delhi, grounding her later work in formal classical study.
Udawatta came to wider notice as a finalist in Sirasa Super Star (season three) and through television music programmes such as Chat ‘N’ Music and Sanhinda on the Independent Television Network. Much of her recorded output is tied to television drama, where her voice carries the title themes of popular serials.
On Lyrics-lk she is best represented by teledrama theme songs, including Ahas Maliga (Mage Adare Nam), a duet with Ashan Fernando, and Kalpayak Ma Bala Innam, the Sanda Savi theme she sings with Romesh Sugathapala.
Each page presents the Sinhala lyrics with an English transliteration and translation. Now based in Dubai, Lakmini Udawaththa has also taught performing arts to Sri Lankan expatriate students there.
