The shadow of your eyes… rises in the sky tonight
This night comes back to memory… a sigh slips out in secret
A cold sob… love stirs alive inside a dream
Will that hand reach out to me again
My delight, come back to me
This singing night… a dream, a plea
My heart is still mine, lost in you
Caught in a dream
All day long it’s my one prayer
Thinking you’ll come, searching for me
Are you murmuring in a dream… turned into longing
Will you be a comfort to me once more, mine again
Slipping into my heart, hiding away
Will that love come back
Those lips parting in the smile I longed for
Will that life come back to me
Floating far off, you drift and wander away
All through the time you gave me
The pain I offered up, it slipped into hiding
Will that love come back
Even on a night that aches with grief
Will you be there, in my life
The shadow of your eyes… rises in the sky tonight
This night comes back to memory… a sigh slips out in secret
A cold sob… love stirs alive inside a dream
Will that hand reach out to me again
My delight, come back to me
This singing night… a dream, a plea
My heart is still mine, lost in you
Caught in a dream
All day long it’s my one prayer
Thinking you’ll come, searching for me

Dase Chaya Song Meaning and Interpretation
It’s late at night, the sky is dark, and a young man cannot stop seeing her. The title says it plainly: dase chaya, the shadow that lingers in his eyes. He looks up and the night sky itself seems to hold the image of the one he loves, so that even the empty dark is full of her. From the first line he is alone with a memory that will not let him rest, and a sigh escapes him that he tries to keep secret, the way you do when the longing is too private to say out loud.
The whole song is one question asked over and over: will she come back. He keeps circling the same hope. Will that hand reach for him again, will that love return, will that life return, will she be there in his life. Each verse turns over a different piece of her, a smile he waited for, the way her parted lips looked, a comfort he used to feel, and each time he ends on the same ache, enawada ea aadare, “will that love come back.” He isn’t telling a story so much as praying, and he says so himself, calling it his aaradhana, his plea, the one thing his mind reaches for all day and all night.
The imagery here is gentle and inward, built out of night and dreams rather than grand pictures. In Sinhala love song the night (raa) is when feeling can’t be held back, when the day’s distractions fall away and the heart is left alone with what it misses, and the dream (heene) is the only place the two of them can still meet. So when he sings that love wakes up inside a dream, or that he can hear her murmuring in a dream, he is admitting the obvious sad truth underneath: in waking life she is gone, and only sleep gives her back to him for a moment. The smile he describes, the lips he longed to see part, are remembered, not present.
By the last verses the distance is clear. She is floating far away, drifting and wandering, and he is left holding the pain he once offered her, a pain he hid away rather than burden her with. What stays with you is not bitterness but a soft, unanswered waiting. He never gets a reply. The song simply ends where it began, with him watching the night sky, certain only that he is searching, and hoping against the silence that she is searching for him too.
