Hanthana Kandu Pela Lyrics
Hanthana kandu pela handata awada
Sarasawiyata pini podak wetenawa
Mage hada medurata andura galanawa
Battitthek mage dukata handanawa
Ko ae kohida mage ran kirillee
Aeido giye igillee ma mehi herada

Hanthana Kandu Pela Lyrics English Translation
The Hanthana mountain range sings a lullaby to the moon
A handful of dew falls over the university
Darkness flows into the chamber of my heart
A little bird is crying for my sorrow
Where is she, where, my golden bird?
Why did she fly away and leave me here?
Far, the distance you have gone is far
My home is cold, come flying back to me
The little birds left alone like me,
do they too fear the gathering dusk?
Are they singing my song of separation?
Are they trying to comfort me?
I cannot fly away
And she will not come back to the university
By the river, the path of our love has fallen empty
The flower petals have wilted in the muddy water
Where is she ….

Hanthana Kandu Pela Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is standing alone at the foot of the Hanthana hills, by the campus where he once shared his days with the girl he loved, and she is gone. The song opens on that exact place at nightfall. Hanthana is the mountain range that rises behind the University of Peradeniya, and for generations of students it has been the backdrop to first love and goodbyes, so naming it here is not just scenery. It tells a Sri Lankan listener instantly that this is a campus romance, the kind that begins among lectures and lake walks and ends when one person leaves.
Watch how the outside world carries his grief for him. The hills sing softly to the moon, dew settles over the university like quiet tears, and then darkness pours straight into “the chamber of my heart,” so the falling night and the falling sadness become the same thing. A small bird cries nearby, and he hears his own pain in its call. He calls her his “ran kirilli,” his golden bird, a tender Sinhala way of naming a beloved, and the ache of the line is that the bird he loves has flown off and left him behind, unable to fly after her.
The middle of the song turns gentle and almost childlike. He looks at the other little birds left alone in the gathering dusk and wonders if they are frightened too, if they are singing his song of separation back to him, if they are trying to comfort him. It is a lonely person reaching for company anywhere he can find it, even in the birds at sundown.
Then the truth lands plainly. He cannot fly away to her, and she is not coming back to the campus. The closing image is the heaviest one: by the river where they used to walk, their path now lies empty, and the flower petals have wilted in the muddy water. In Sinhala song a fresh flower stands for love in bloom, so petals rotting in dirty river water is love spoiled and beyond saving. The fact that it happens at the very riverbank that once held their happiest moments is what makes it hurt. He is left standing in the cold of an empty house, still calling her name into the dark, knowing no answer is coming.
