A young man is so far gone in love that he has to quiet his own heart down. The song opens with him talking to himself, telling his heart to be still and just listen, because it keeps murmuring restlessly the way a heart does when someone has taken it over. That is the whole mood of the song: a person flooded with happiness, almost unable to hold it all in.

From there he looks at the world around him and finds his love painted all over it. A field full of flowers opening one by one feels like it belongs to him, a light cooling rain seems to fall straight into his heart, and the fragrance drifting off the flowers fills the very air he breathes. None of this is really about plants and rain. In Sinhala song, the opening flower, the soft shower and the spreading scent are all the standard language of love taking root and blooming, of a heart softening and coming alive. He is saying that being loved has made even the ordinary world smell sweet and feel tender.

The second half names the feeling outright. The breeze blows “only for us,” so the two of them feel like the world has narrowed to just them. Then comes the big line: why should there be any sorrow, when love is as tall as Mount Meru? Meru is the great cosmic mountain of Buddhist and Hindu tradition, the tallest thing imaginable, so comparing his love to it is his way of saying it is too vast for sadness to touch.

The last image is the loveliest. On an amavaka night, the darkest night of the month with no moon at all, he says his beloved is the thousand stars that push the darkness back. In a culture where the moon usually stands for the beloved, here she is even more than that, she is what gives light when there is no moon at all. The world lit by her, he says, is his and his alone. The listener is left with the quiet certainty of someone who has found a love big enough to light up his darkest sky.
