A woman has reached the end of a love that turned out to be a lie, and she is done. The song opens with her telling the man straight to his face to stop fooling her, because she has finally seen him for what he is. There is no pleading here and no anger raised to a shout, just a tired, clear-eyed goodbye from someone who gave everything and got a performance in return.

The heart of the song is the image of love as a stage play. She calls what they had a “pem ranganaya,” a drama of love, and tells him to stop acting his part. In Sinhala this lands hard, because it says the warmth he showed her was never real feeling, only a role he played well. She even admits the bitter truth that he learned about love from her, she was the one who taught him, and yet he never grasped what it actually means. He took the lessons and missed the heart of them.

Then comes the line that decodes the whole song. She compares him to a deer running after “miringu diya,” the water of a mirage. In the dry-zone heat of Sri Lanka a thirsty deer will chase the shimmer on the horizon that looks like a pool of water, and the closer it gets the more the water keeps moving away, because there was never any water there at all. That is what his idea of love is, she says: a beautiful illusion he keeps chasing that will never give him anything real. So she tells him to stop running. If he wants a soft bed of flowers in the shade of love, let him go find it somewhere else and rest there, while she quietly disappears into the dark.

What she is left holding, and what she hands him at the end, is emptiness. She has cried her last tears over him, and having spent even those, she has nothing tender left to offer. The ache in the song is not that she still wants him back. It is that she once had so much love to give, and now, after being deceived, the well has simply run dry.
