Doctor (ඩොක්ටර්) is a Sri Lankan pop and baila band led by vocalist and guitarist Lanthra Perera, best known for the hit “Mage Girl Friend” and for its roots in the famous Perera musical family behind the Gypsies. The Doctor band built a following through the 2010s with upbeat Sinhala pop, baila, and English-flavoured covers performed on stages across Sri Lanka and the diaspora.
Lanthra Perera comes from one of Sri Lanka’s most recognisable musical families. He is the son of Nimal Perera, the original bassist of the Gypsies, and the nephew of Sunil Perera, the late frontman who turned baila into mainstream party music. That heritage runs through Doctor’s sound, which leans on the same crowd-pleasing baila energy while adding contemporary pop. Nimal Perera has also served as the band’s manager.
The group’s breakthrough came with “Mage Girl Friend” (මගේ Girl Friend), released around 2010, which won the award for Best Baila Genre Music Video at the 2011 Derana Music Video Awards. Several of the band’s original singles went on to top local charts, and Doctor became a fixture at live shows and musical events. The Doctor band has toured North America, Australia, and the Gulf, playing for Sri Lankan audiences abroad.
Doctor’s repertoire mixes original material with party-set covers. The band was one of several acts featured on the “Carlton Super 7 Theme Song (2014)”, a multi-artist track tied to the cricket tournament. Its own catalogue includes baila numbers, romantic pop, and seasonal releases.
