Udaya supipunu malak bandu
Lapati atha paya hungak mudu
Amma hari aadaren sedu
Maage nangige namai sudu
Amma hari aadaren sedu
Maage nangige namai sudu
Udaya supipunu malak bandu
Chutta weraduna thenadi bala
Randu weela kandulu sala //
Handa handa inda, tikak wela..
Yaalu wei yali hina wela...//
Pipena dewal kohoma hari
Gannepa tha langata heri
nangi mage langa nethuwa beri
eyath hari mage panath hari
nangi mage langa nethuwa beri
eyath hari mage panath hariUdaya Supipunu Malak Bandu Lyrics English Translation
Like a flower that bloomed at dawn,
with tiny hands and feet, so soft,
Mother raised her with so much love.
My little sister’s name is Sudu.
Mother raised her with so much love.
My little sister’s name is Sudu.
Like a flower that bloomed at dawn…
Look, when she makes a small mistake,
we quarrel and the tears come.
After crying a while,
we are friends again, laughing.
Whatever flowers, however it comes,
please don’t take it away from me.
I can’t be without my little sister near me.
She is precious, and so is my own life.
I can’t be without my little sister near me.
She is precious, and so is my own life.

Udaya Supipunu Malak Bandu Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a children’s song, sung in the voice of a child about his little sister. Her name is Sudu, a common pet name for a fair, beloved little girl, and the whole song is built around how much he adores her. It opens with the image every Sri Lankan parent reaches for when speaking of a newborn: a flower that has just opened at dawn. A flower at first light is fresh, soft and unspoiled, and that is exactly how he sees his baby sister, with her tiny hands and feet and her skin still new to the world. Their mother, he says, raised her with great love, and that tenderness sets the tone for everything that follows.
The middle of the song is the truest part of having a younger sibling. They squabble over some small thing, somebody cries, and for a while there are tears and sulking. Then, just as quickly, it passes and they are friends again, laughing together. Anyone who grew up with a brother or sister will recognise this little storm and the easy peace that comes after it.
The last verse is where the affection turns into something deeper. “Whatever flowers, however it comes, please don’t take it away from me” reads almost like a quiet prayer, the child asking that nothing ever separate him from his sister. He cannot imagine being without her close by. The closing line, that she is precious and his own life is precious too, ties the two together: her wellbeing and his own have become the same thing. What starts as a sweet description of a baby ends as a small, heartfelt promise of love between a brother and his little sister.
