Chooti Kurullani Lyrics

Chooti kurullani, chooti batiththani
Piya sala ahase, ranchu gesi piyambanna ithin
Oba lassana akase
Kanda udin ara lassana hiru nega
Lowama eliya karana
Kurulu handin mulu lowama awadi kara
Dawasa uda wenawa

Keechi beechi ga chooti kurullo
Chooti geetha gayathi
Geetha gaya e chooti kurullo
Wannamakuth natathi

Geetha gayala wannam natala
Lowama awadi kara dei
Chooti babala ewa balala
Sathuthu sithin nelawei

Chooti Kurullani Lyrics English Translation

Little birds, little baby birds
Flying across the sky, soaring in flocks
You up in the beautiful sky
Over the mountain that lovely sun has risen
Lighting up the whole world
The birdsong wakes the whole world
And the day breaks

Chirping and twittering, the little birds
Sing their little songs
Singing songs, those little birds
Dance their dances too

Singing songs and dancing dances
They wake the whole world up
Looking at those little chicks
Our hearts are cradled with joy

Chooti Kurullani Song Meaning and Interpretation

This is a children’s song, the kind sung to little ones in the morning, and it is really a gentle picture of daybreak in the village. There is no lover or longing here, just the simple wonder of waking up to the sound of birds. The singer speaks straight to the birds themselves, calling them “chooti kurullani” and “chooti batiththani,” which mean little birds and little baby birds, the small fond words a grown-up uses with a child.

The scene builds the way a real morning does. First the birds rise into the sky and fly off in flocks. Then the sun climbs up over the mountain and light spills across everything. As the birds start to sing, the whole world stirs and wakes, and the day begins. For a child, this teaches something true in the softest way, that the birds and the sunrise belong together, and that morning is something to greet rather than dread.

In the middle the song turns playful. The little birds do not just sing, they chirp and twitter (“keechi beechi”) and even dance, doing their “wannam,” the patterned dances of Sri Lankan tradition. Picturing tiny birds performing graceful temple-style dances is the song’s bit of fun, and it gives a child a happy, easy image to hold onto.

It closes on warmth. The birds’ singing and dancing wakes the whole world, and watching the little chicks fills the heart with joy. That last line, “sathuthu sithin nelawei,” carries the image of being rocked or cradled, the way a baby is gently swayed, so the happiness does not just sit in the heart, it soothes and settles it. The song leaves both the child and the grown-up singing it with a small, peaceful gladness, the feeling of a fresh morning and tiny birds making the world come alive.
