Aya Konde Digata Dala Lyrics
Eya konde digata dala hema udema enawa
Pata pata mal wetichha sari adinawa
Poth mitiyayi kudei athe ne waradinne
Eyata api teacher kiyalai amathanne
Ape panthiye lamai ekka ae hari yalui
Ae pasal nawa data panthiya palui//
Gamaralage kathawatai api hari asa
Kawadawath ne panthiye karanne gosa
Sina genena kaththamai ae pawasanne
Adarayen semada apa hata salakanne//
Aya asalama gewasennata api harai asai
Me panthiya damayanna api hari lobai
Aya Konde Digata Dala Lyrics English Translation
She comes every morning with her hair worn long
Wearing a sari with colourful flowers scattered across it
A bundle of books and an umbrella in her hands, always just right
We call her “teacher”
She gets along so well with the children in our class
After school she stays back and runs an extra class
We love listening to her tell the story of Gamarala
She never misses a class, never skips a day
She tells it all with a smile on her face
And she looks after every one of us with love
We all love it when she comes near us
We really long for this class never to end

Aya Konde Digata Dala Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a children’s song, sung by the pupils about a teacher they adore. There is no romance or heartbreak here, just the simple, happy way young children see a grown-up they look up to. The whole song is a fond little portrait, drawn from a child’s eye level.
The picture they paint is full of small, real details, the kind a child actually notices. Their teacher arrives every morning with her hair worn long and a sari printed with colourful flowers, a bundle of books and an umbrella always in her hands. In Sri Lanka the sari and the books and umbrella are the everyday image of a village schoolteacher walking to school, so these lines instantly place her: she is the familiar, dependable figure the children wait for each day. They are proud that she stays after school to teach an extra class and that she never misses a day, the kind of thing children boast about when they love someone.
The warmest touch is the story of Gamarala. Gamarala is the well-meaning, slightly foolish village farmer from old Sinhala folk tales, the comic figure children’s stories love. The line tells us their teacher does more than drill lessons, she sits them down and tells the funny Gamarala stories with a smile, the way a kind teacher makes learning feel like play. That smile, and the way she treats every child with love, is what the children hold onto.
By the end the feeling is plain and sweet. They love it when she comes near, and they wish the class would never finish. It is the song of children who feel safe and cared for, and it leaves you with that gentle warmth of a favourite teacher you never wanted to leave behind.
