A young man is caught in the early ache of love, the kind that feels more like a beautiful dream than something he can hold. He has fallen for a girl, and the whole song is him turning that feeling over, half in wonder and half in worry. His love has bound his heart and even, as he puts it, lined his eyes, the way kohl darkens and softens a gaze. But right away he names his fear: this golden dream might be a trick.

The arc of the song is the back and forth between that sweetness and that doubt. He sees golden stars caught in his own eyes, the shine of someone newly in love, and asks when the dream will finally come true. Then the mood dips. He wonders whether the boundless love in his heart has quietly gone faint and slipped away, hidden from him. By the last verse he admits he is left burning because of this love, and that even though his secret inner self is completely tied to her, he still does not know what is really in her heart.

The images here are the familiar ones of Sinhala love poetry, and they carry the meaning. The rainbow (indu dunna, the bow of the rain) is the key one. A rainbow is dazzling and golden and then it is simply gone, so comparing his love to it says he is afraid this beautiful thing has no substance and will vanish before he can reach it. The golden stars in his eyes are the look of someone dazzled by new love, the same brightness that makes the rainbow lovely and untrustworthy. Calling her a golden dream (ran sihina) places her just out of reach, something glowing that he might wake from at any moment.

What the listener is left holding is the helplessness of one-sided early love. He has given his whole hidden heart to her, yet he has no idea whether she feels the same, and that not-knowing is what keeps him burning. It is the tender, uneasy stage before anything is certain, written as a sweet song that, like his love, he hopes will never fade.
