Gum Naade Raanin Raane Lyrics
Gum nade ranin rane meemassan ranak se
Aakase attatu vihida igilenne santose
Sit yaaye sit mal peedi mal mee do vehenne
Heenen dutu paradise sittamdo diswanne
Ganga dige sithe diya vel surai
Paavi noyaa oya vaage unnot hodai
Pewata sitse daskam dagakarakan
Maa gaava innai kiuwe hera modakam
Me nidahase geetayen hita hinahae preethiyen
Mulu lova pe adaren sattai .... labai jeevithe //
Hadda kaele kawurun rahasin ebei
Hangi bala oya kawudai lanvi kiyan
Kolamda sellam kaale hari nadagam
Maa gaava innai kiuwe hera modakam
Me manaram yaamaye hita piruna jeevayen
Mulu lova pe adaren sattai .... labai jeevithe //
Gum nade ranin rane ....
Gum Naade Raanin Raane Lyrics English Translation
A humming sound, swarm after swarm, like a swarm of honeybees
Spreading wings across the sky, flying off in pure joy
In the meadow of the heart the heart’s flowers bloom, raining flower-honey
The paradise we saw in a dream now shows itself like a painting
The cool streams of water along the river are lovely
It would be good if you stayed like that, never floating away
You showed off all your skill and your mischief to your heart’s content
Leave the foolishness aside and stay with me, that’s what you said
With this song of freedom the heart laughs out of pure delight
With the love the whole world showed, it’s true, life is given to us //
Deep in the thick of the forest, who is it peeking out in secret?
Hiding and watching, come close and tell me who you are
Was it a masquerade, was it playtime, or was it all a folk-play?
Leave the foolishness aside and stay with me, that’s what you said
In this lovely hour the heart filled up with life
With the love the whole world showed, it’s true, life is given to us //
A humming sound, swarm after swarm….

Gum Naade Raanin Raane Song Meaning and Interpretation
This one is a duet, a young man and a young woman trading lines in pure high spirits, two people so caught up in each other that the whole world seems to be celebrating with them. There is no heartbreak here. It is the sound of new love at its lightest and happiest, the part where everything looks brighter than it really is and you cannot stop smiling.
The song opens with bees. A humming swarm of honeybees rising into the sky is an old Sinhala image for joy that cannot be contained, the kind that lifts off and flies. From there it moves straight into the heart. Picture the heart as a meadow, “sith yaaya,” where flowers suddenly bloom and drip honey, “mal mee.” That is how the singer describes what falling in love feels like inside the chest, a field that was bare now bursting into flower. And the paradise they had only seen in dreams is finally real enough to look at, “like a painting,” something you can stand in front of and take in.
Then they tease each other the way new lovers do. One asks the other to stay like the cool water of a river, close and gentle, instead of drifting away downstream. There is a gentle scolding too, “leave the foolishness aside and stay with me,” the kind of pretend complaint that really means come here, I want you near. The forest verse keeps the play going, one of them hiding and peeking out, the other calling, who are you, come closer, was all of this just a game, a folk-play, a bit of make-believe. Sri Lankan listeners will catch the words “kolam” and “nadagam,” names for old village masque and folk theatre, used here to ask whether the courtship has been one long playful performance.
What ties it together is the line that comes back each time, that with all the love the whole world is showing them, life itself feels like a gift. That is the heart of the song. When two people are this happy, it stops being just about the two of them, the sky, the river, the bees and the flowers all seem to join in, and being alive feels like the luckiest thing there is.
