The song opens inside one of those dreams, a quiet, secret world where he makes promises and forces a smile even while his heart is full of tears. She walks past him, and just seeing her stirs everything up again, like a stone dropped into still water. The strongest line is the one that holds the whole song: the day she walked out and left him behind, he never moved. He is still standing in the exact spot where she last saw him, frozen in that moment, while life went on around him.

The middle of the song is where the ache deepens. He says he coated his own heart in tears and then, strangely, started to enjoy the dark, finding a bitter kind of sweetness in his sadness.
