A young man is still in love with someone he has lost, and the only place he can reach her now is in his dreams. The song opens inside one of those dreams, a quiet, secret world where he makes promises and forces a smile even while his heart is full of tears. She walks past him, and just seeing her stirs everything up again, like a stone dropped into still water. The strongest line is the one that holds the whole song: the day she walked out and left him behind, he never moved. He is still standing in the exact spot where she last saw him, frozen in that moment, while life went on around him.

The middle of the song is where the ache deepens. He says he coated his own heart in tears and then, strangely, started to enjoy the dark, finding a bitter kind of sweetness in his sadness. That is the state heartbreak puts you in, where the pain becomes the only thing that still connects you to the person, so you almost want it. Then “a shadow of the moon hid away” and left his eyes wet and alone. The moon in Sinhala song usually stands for the beloved, her face, her calm, comforting presence. Here even her shadow slips away and hides, so what little light he had is gone, and he is left crying by himself in the dark.

The last verse names the grief plainly. A sound trembles and cracks with only one hand to carry it, the image of clapping with one hand, of a love that needed two people and now has only him. This was a real love, the kind that comes once and never returns, and so he says he wept “in a great ocean,” not a few tears but a whole sea of them, grief with no shore in sight.

What ties it all together is that “autumn dream.” Autumn is the season when things fade and fall, and the whole song lives in that mood of something beautiful already passing. Yet every verse circles back to the same refrain: that dream, soaked in tears, still belongs to her, and it is still her he loves. He is not trying to move on.
