The friend’s warning runs all through the song: “you’ve been fooled.” The young man clings to a world the girl once described to him, a time that felt like it belonged to the two of them. He keeps repeating that it will come true, that his friend shouldn’t doubt it. But the chorus quietly turns the knife. That world she spoke of “now feels just like a dream,” and a dream is exactly what it is, something he holds onto while it slips further from anything real.
