Parami Piru Maga Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is a searching, philosophical song steeped in Buddhist thought, written as a theme for the teledrama Vishwaye Doratuwa: Sasara Parami. It is built almost entirely of anxious questions. Does the path filled with parami, the perfections a soul cultivates over many lifetimes, come to a halt here? Have the wishes hidden in the heart faded, has this cruel world somehow turned sweet, and is the merit-seeking heart left all alone in samsara, the endless round of rebirth?
The middle turns those questions inward and darker. The road that chases life’s comfort, it says, only drags a person along through suffering, and the heart sobs beside the kilesa, the defilements, turning like the wheel of karma. Then comes the most striking line, pure Buddhist teaching: I who am not even my own self, it says, touching the doctrine of anatta, no-self, and describes a person kept alive on his own shoulders, sobbing the suffering of existence and wandering samsara until he becomes little more than a restless, haunting ghost.
The final image is of light lost. The pas kanda, the five aggregates that make up a being, and the heaped flowers of defilement have risen as high as the sky, and the lamp-light that once watched over all three worlds is today drowned in avidya, the darkness of ignorance. Rather than comfort, the song offers an unflinching picture of a being lost in samsara, and its beauty lies in how seriously it takes the Dhamma, turning hard Buddhist truths into something you can feel.
