A young man is searching for the woman he loves, and to say how she holds him he reaches all the way back to the oldest love story his culture knows. He calls her Radha and turns himself into Krishna, the cowherd god who loved her. In Sinhala the very first word, “unmadani,” means the woman who drives you mad, the one whose beauty leaves you no peace, and that is exactly the state he is in. She has hidden herself away, and all he has left is the memory of her eyes looking at him full of love.

The song lives almost entirely inside the world of Krishna and Radha, the great romance of Hindu devotion, and the imagery only opens up once you know that story. The Vrinda forest (Vrindavan) is where the young Krishna and Radha met and played, so when he pictures her swaying among flowers, weaving garlands there, he is placing her in the most sacred lover’s setting there is. The blue lotus pool she dives in and out of, the honey scent of the flowers, the loosening of the jewelled chain at her waist, all of it paints her as the playful, untouchable girl of those old verses, here one moment and gone the next. The repeated cry “where, oh where is Radha” is the ache of Krishna himself, forever reaching for a beloved who slips out of his hands.

The second verse turns from play to sorrow. He sees her on the bank of the Yamuna, the river that runs through every Krishna story, among the gopis, the cowherd girls who adored him. There she “lost her way,” and the monsoon clouds that should bring relief instead let fall “drops of sorrow.” In Sri Lankan and Indian feeling the rains carry longing more than joy, the grey sky matching a heart that misses someone, so the rain that comes is not refreshing but grieving.

What the listener is left holding is that old, unfinished longing dressed in a modern love song. By naming his girl Radha, he is not just flattering her beauty, he is saying she is the love a man chases his whole life and never quite catches, the one who maddens him precisely because she keeps slipping away.
