He recalls how completely he gave himself to it, wishing for her alone and blending his every longing until, in the song’s grandest image, he built a Taj Mahal of love, a monument of devotion. And then the loss: she gave her life to someone else, and he was left to hand all he had of her over to a passing breeze, like alms given away.

The middle wrestles with how to hold the pain. A love cradled in sorrow, he says, never quite loses its warmth, and even forgotten it will still be there tomorrow, the memory refusing to fade.
