This song is sung in the voice of a small child talking to their mother, and its whole charm is how the child keeps bumping against feelings they are too young to name. It opens with a girl telling the child that flowers are pretty, that they come in lovely colours. The child turns to the mother, half lost: what was I even going to ask you? I can’t tell these things apart. Right away you sense that something has stirred in this little one, something bigger than a question about flowers.

The middle of the song is the child trying, and failing, to make sense of words. Flowers have a scent, sure, but what is “colour”? What is “light”? The child can feel the soft petals but can’t grasp these ideas everyone else seems to share. In Sinhala these lines work on two levels at once. A young child really is still learning what colour and light mean, but the song is also using them for the things you only understand once your heart wakes up. The girl, her presence, the warmth of her, is the “colour” and “light” the child senses but cannot yet put into words.

That warmth turns literal in the next verse. The child notices she gives off a kind of heat, stronger by night than by day, that there is a change happening they can’t explain. The grown-ups brush it off, “you’re only a little child,” and the child half believes them, wondering whether the meaning of all this will only arrive later: when I grow up, will I finally hear the sound? It is the ache of standing right at the edge of first feeling, sensing it without yet having the words.

Then the last verse turns and catches you. The child suddenly asks, why am I crying, mother? Tears are running down my hand and I don’t know why. And just as fast the child covers it up, the way children do: no, no, I was only joking, I’ll go tell the boys some lies to tease them. That little retreat is the heart of the song. Something real has touched this child, real enough to bring tears, and not understanding it, they laugh it off and run back to play. You are left holding that tenderness, the very first flicker of love arriving in someone far too young to know its name.
