Dumal Warnakulasooriya (also spelled Dumal Warnakulasuriya), දුමල් වර්ණකුලසූරිය, is a Sri Lankan playback singer, vocalist, and music coach known for his film and teledrama songs and for his work as a judge on television singing contests. Trained in Hindustani classical music, he became one of the most in-demand voices for Sinhala cinema and serial soundtracks through the 2010s and 2020s.
Warnakulasooriya was born on 15 December 1983 in Sadalankawa, in Sri Lanka’s North Western Province. He pursued formal music education abroad, travelling to India in 2003 to study for a Bachelor of Performing Arts at the Bhatkhande Music Institute in Lucknow, one of the country’s foremost centres for Hindustani classical training. That grounding in classical technique shaped the controlled, melodic delivery that later suited both film scoring and emotional serial themes.
Warnakulasooriya built his reputation as a playback singer for Sinhala films, lending his voice to productions including Gharasarpa (2018), Kalu Hima (2018), and Uthuru Sulanga (2023). His film work sits alongside a long list of television serial theme songs, the format that brought his voice into homes across the island and the diaspora. The teledrama and film catalogue is where his songs on Lyrics-lk are concentrated, from the Gharasarpa soundtrack number Kalu Kumara to the Rana teledrama song Numba Numbema and the Sirasa TV drama theme Eka Diga Kathawak, which he also composed.
Beyond his screen work, Dumal Warnakulasuriya is known for romantic singles and ballads that have circulated widely online. Among his recognised titles are the 2021 single “Yashodara” and the collaboration “Arumasi Adare” with Kavindya Adikari. Several of his most-played songs are available on Lyrics-lk with Sinhala lyrics and English translation.
Warnakulasooriya has received best-singer honours at Sri Lankan award ceremonies recognising film and television music, including events associated with the Sumathi, Raigam Tele, and Sarasaviya awards. Alongside performing, he has worked as a vocal coach and judge on reality singing competitions, including a Sri Lankan edition of The Voice Teens and Ranaviru Real Star, mentoring a younger generation of singers.
