Rathna Lalani Jayakody (රත්නා ලාලනී ජයකොඩි, also spelled Ratna Lalani Jayakody) is a Sri Lankan actress and teacher whose work spans theatre, film, and television. Born on 8 January 1964 in Colombo, she is best known on stage, and the songs carried on Lyrics-lk come from the stage dramas she performed in, where her voice was judged well suited to dramatic singing.
Jayakody was the youngest in an artistic family. Her elder sister Geetha Kanthi Jayakody is a celebrated award-winning actress, and her nephew Bimal Jayakody is a well-known screen actor. She first reached audiences through programmes on the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation before moving toward the stage.
She made her theatre debut in 1985 and went on to appear in more than fifty stage dramas, many of them alongside her husband, the actor Sampath Tennakoon. She won Best Stage Actress recognition on several occasions during the 1980s and 1990s. It was this theatre work, rather than a separate recording career, that produced the songs associated with her name: pieces written and composed for stage productions and later catalogued under her as the performer.
The Rathna Lalani Jayakody recordings hosted here are drawn from stage dramas, including a cluster from the production Diwasa Helanu Mana and the drama Andarela. “Matha Wara Waranidhunta” carries lyrics by Rathna Sri Wijesinghe with music by Ostin Munasinghe, while “Madura Pura Raja Geyaka Upanne” from Andarela sets words by Bandara Ahaliyagoda to music by Rohana Baddage.
Beyond the stage, Ratna Lalani Jayakody has acted in Sri Lankan films across several decades and in television, where her role as Ranjani in the serial Yashorawaya drew particular praise. She has continued to teach alongside her performing work. The songs gathered here, with their Sinhala lyrics and English translation, preserve a slice of her theatre work for listeners who know her primarily from the screen.
Every Sinhala lyric, composition, and song credit by Rathna Lalani Jayakody.
