Ranidu Lankage (රනිදු ලංකාගේ), often credited simply as Ranidu, is a Sri Lankan singer, songwriter, and producer widely regarded as a pioneer of Sinhala R&B and hip hop. Born in 1982 in Colombo, he brought a Western pop and urban sound to Sinhala-language music in the early 2000s and reached audiences far beyond Sri Lanka.
Ranidu was educated at Royal College, Colombo, where he placed near the top of the Colombo district in the 2000 G.C.E. Advanced Level examination. He went on to study economics at Yale University in the United States, and his time abroad shaped the bilingual, diaspora-facing character of his music.
Ranidu’s debut single, “Oba Magemai”, became an early radio hit and helped define a new wave of Sinhala pop. The 2003 album of the same name made him one of the youngest Sri Lankan artists of his generation to draw the attention of an international label. Lyrics-lk hosts Oba Magemai with its Sinhala lyrics, transliteration, and English translation.
His follow-up work produced “Ahankara Nagare” (අහංකාර නගරේ), one of the most recognised original Sri Lankan singles of its decade. The track climbed local charts quickly and earned attention on the BBC’s Asian music programming, part of a run that saw Ranidu Lankage become among the first Sinhala-language artists played on BBC Radio 1 and on MTV’s regional channels.
Ranidu blended R&B, hip hop, and Sinhala melody, and he worked with several artists from the same scene, including the singer Ashanthi, with whom he recorded duet material. His catalogue ranges from club-leaning singles to softer, melodic songs, a breadth reflected in the titles available on Lyrics-lk.
By taking Sinhala lyrics into R&B, hip hop, and a glossy pop production style, Ranidu Lankage opened a path that many later Sri Lankan urban artists followed. His songs remain popular with listeners at home and across the diaspora, who return to tracks such as Ahankara Nagare and Oba Magemai for both the music and the meaning behind the words.
