Namal Udugama (නාමල් උඩුගම), born Prasanna Namal Udugama on 21 October 1967 in Thalathuoya, Kandy, is a Sri Lankan singer, composer and songwriter. He became one of the most popular romantic vocalists of the 1990s, nicknamed the prince of dreams by the youth audiences who filled his indoor and outdoor shows, and his songs of love and longing remain staples of Sinhala radio and stage decades later.
Udugama grew up in the Kandy hill country and was educated at Hewahata Central College, where he learned guitar and performed at school events before joining a band in Kandy. He later moved to Colombo to record, drawing on a mix of pop, soul, rhythm and blues and Indian classical phrasing that shaped his soft, melodic vocal style.
His breakthrough came with Samuganne Na Wenwanne Na, which he both composed and sang and which established his place in the Sri Lankan music industry. Lyrics-lk hosts that recording as Samuganne Na Wenwanne Na, one of the handful of songs he wrote the music for himself. Across albums such as Samuganne Na, Thani Unada, Susumada Kandulaki and Issara Senehasa, he built a catalogue rooted in tender, dream-tinged love songs.
Many of the recordings most associated with him are about parting, memory and quiet devotion. Issara Senehasa Thissema Hada Thula and Obe Lowe Ada Ma Randila are among his best known, alongside the wistful Ra Sihinen and the devotional Sithul Pawwa. He also wrote both melody and words for Nisala Wela, showing the composer side of his work.
Udugama is married to the actress Ruwanthi Mangala, with whom he has two children. In early 2015 he suffered severe liver failure and underwent a successful liver transplant in Chennai in mid 2015, after which he scaled back but continued to perform and record. With a career spanning more than three decades, Namal Udugama is remembered as a defining voice of pre reality television Sinhala pop, and his romantic ballads continue to draw listeners across Sri Lanka and the diaspora.
