A young man is letting go of the woman he loves, and the whole song is the sound of him doing it as gently as he can. There is no anger in it, no blame. The first thing he says is that she did nothing wrong, my darling, you made no mistake, and he keeps coming back to that line because he needs her to believe it. Whatever has pulled them apart, it was not her fault, and he would rather carry the hurt himself than let her feel guilty.

He reaches for a rose to say what has happened to them. So he sets her free. He says he will start to think of her as he would a younger sister, turning the love into something he can keep without hurting either of them, and asks that they let each other go and find peace. It is the quiet dignity of someone who loves enough to stop holding on, and that is what makes the song ache.
