A young man is awake in the middle of the night with a girl he can only reach in his sleep. She told him to stay close, and then she slipped away and hid inside a tear, floated off on a sigh, and left him lying there with his eyes open. The whole song sits in that gap between the dream and the empty room he wakes up in.

The images in the first verse are all small and soft, and they are all about disappearing. A tear is a strange place to hide, but it is the right one here, because she only shows up when he is close to crying. Plucking the buds of the star flowers turns the night sky into a garden he is picking through for her. Then comes the sharpest line of the song: his heart has been “signed over” to her. The Sinhala word is the one used for handing over property in a deed, and he adds that it happened behind his own back. He never agreed to this. It was done, and he found out afterwards.

The chorus is where he stops describing and starts asking. The stars have gone to sleep, and she is the one who takes the loneliness out of the moon, which in Sinhala song is the loneliest thing in the sky. She shares his happiness, she takes away his emptiness, and then she leaves. That word “kuludul”, first love, matters. This is not a woman he lost after years together. She belongs to the very first time he ever felt this, which is why she stays this bright and this unreachable.

The second half turns tender before it hurts again. She sleeps at the corner of his eye, right where a tear forms, and she cools it. She sleeps in his arms and shares his dreams. Then he mentions the untouched kiss, a kiss no one else has ever taken, and she is gone at exactly that moment, one breath before it happens. The flower arrows he keeps asking for belong to the god of love, and he is asking to be struck again, knowing what it costs.

What the listener is left holding is the ache of loving someone who exists only while you are asleep, and the strange comfort of going back every night anyway. Madura Hewage’s words keep the girl faceless on purpose. “Who is she” and “where is she” are never answered, and the song is better for it, because anyone who has held on to a first love this way already knows the face.
