Mage Nangi Lyrics
Mage nangi pahanai ma loke
Aruthai jeevithe obatai me geethe
Mage adare sihiwei podi kaale
Ape jeevithe mathake rewu de
Kaluvara rae yaame apa denamage aa nangiye
Udaye mal nelaa suwadin piru ma penchiye
Vimana kurulu gee mumuna kiwu vihagi mage
Diviye vehesa naa oba sewanathe hinduna
Oba wage bonikko niwase godai
Podi kale mage loke mithuri obai
Ee kale wada dunna hati man dagai
Man hinda daduwenda winde obai
Mage nangi...
Oba wage bonikko niwase godai
Podi kale mage loke mithuri obai
Ee kale wada dunna hati man dagai
Man hinda daduwenda winde obai
Mage nangi...
Mage Nangi Lyrics English Translation
My little sister, you are the lamp of my world
You are the meaning of my life, and this song is for you
My love brings back our childhood days
The memories of our life keep echoing
In the dark hours of night, little sister who came to the two of us
My little one, plucking flowers in the morning, scented with their fragrance
My little bird, who hummed and sang the songs of our home
There is no weariness in life when I rest in your shade
There are plenty of dolls like you in the house
In our childhood you were the friend of my whole world
Back then I was naughty, the way I used to trouble you
And because of me, you were the one who got punished
My little sister…
There are plenty of dolls like you in the house
In our childhood you were the friend of my whole world
Back then I was naughty, the way I used to trouble you
And because of me, you were the one who got punished
My little sister…

Mage Nangi Song Meaning and Interpretation
This is an older brother singing to his little sister. “Nangi” is the Sinhala word for a younger sister, and the whole song is one long, tender address to her, half love letter and half memory. He calls her the lamp of his world and the meaning of his life, and from there the song settles into looking back on the years they grew up together.
The warmth here comes from small, ordinary pictures of childhood. He remembers her plucking flowers in the morning, carrying their scent with her, and he calls her his little bird, the one who filled the house with song. When he says there is no weariness in life as long as he can rest in her shade, he is using a very Sri Lankan image: shade is what you seek from the harsh sun, the cool spot under a tree where you can finally rest, so to say someone is your shade is to say they are your comfort and your shelter. A little sister giving shade to her older brother is a gentle reversal, and it tells you how much he leans on her.
The last verse is where the song smiles. He admits there are plenty of dolls in the house, but she was the real one, the playmate of his whole childhood world. Then comes the honest, funny confession every older sibling will recognise: he was the naughty one, always teasing and troubling her, and yet she was the one who got punished for it. That single line carries years of mischief and guilt and affection at once.
What you are left holding is something quieter than a love song and just as deep. It is gratitude for a sister, for a shared childhood, for the person who was always there in the small everyday moments. Anyone with a younger sibling they grew up beside will feel the ache of it, the way time has passed and those simple days are now only memories that, as he says, keep echoing.
