Rakenne apa rakunoth pamanai
Oba Magemai Lyrics English Translation
In this harsh, restless world,
why was I left so alone?
When my heart burns and I break down crying,
will you be looking somewhere else now?
All my life I will keep you safe,
I will teach you kindness and good ways.
You are mine and I am yours,
all through saṃsāra (the cycle of rebirth), for as long as we live.
You are the blue river flowing past,
you are the love that streams and pours,
you are the comfort of early morning,
you are the keeper of my life.
In this dark, cruel world,
you and I are the light.
When the world weeps at love,
will you and I drift apart?
The trees and leaves, the streams and brooks, they are ours,
the little flock of young creatures, they are ours.
Like me, like you, our world too
will only survive if we protect it.

Oba Magemai Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is making a promise to the person he loves, and the whole song is built around two words: you are mine, and I am yours. He opens in a world that feels harsh and cold, asking why he has been left alone, wondering if, when his heart aches and he breaks down, she might already be looking elsewhere. That worry does not last long. It turns into a vow. He will keep her safe for the rest of his life, and they belong to each other not just for now but right through saṃsāra, the Buddhist idea of rebirth after rebirth, the strongest way in Sinhala to say “forever, in this life and every life to come.”
The middle of the song is where the tenderness gathers. He reaches for the gentlest images in the Sri Lankan landscape to describe her. She is the blue river flowing by, the love that streams and pours without stopping, the cool comfort of the early morning hour. In Sinhala song the river and the quiet of dawn stand for calm, steady, life-giving things, beauty that soothes rather than dazzles, so calling her these is his way of saying she is the peace his whole life rests on. He ends the verse by naming her the keeper of his life, the one his days are entrusted to.
Then the song quietly widens out. The two of them are the light in a dark world, and even when love seems to be weeping everywhere around them, he asks whether they could ever drift apart. By the last lines the love is no longer only about the two of them. The trees and the leaves, the little streams, the small flock of young animals, all of it is “ours,” and he says the world itself will only survive if they protect it. What begins as one man’s promise to one woman grows into a gentle plea to care for the living world they share, with the same tenderness he feels for her.
