Haroon Lanthra (also romanized Harun Lanthra; හරූන් ලන්ත්රා) is a Sri Lankan playback and popular singer of the mid-twentieth century, remembered for melodic Sinhala duets and film songs, above all the much-loved “Piruna Hada Santane” (පිරුණා හද සන්තානේ) from the 1966 film Sigiri Kashyapa.
Lanthra belongs to the “old pop” generation of Sinhala singers whose recordings circulated through radio, gramophone, and cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. His best known work pairs his voice with the celebrated female singer Sujatha Attanayake, a partnership that produced several enduring duets. The signature among them, “Piruna Hada Santane,” was recorded for the film Sigiri Kashyapa and remains the song most listeners associate with his name.
Across his catalogue he worked with composers and lyricists of the era documented in Sinhala song archives, and his repertoire of light, tuneful numbers has been re-recorded and re-released over the decades, keeping the songs in circulation for newer audiences.
Beyond “Piruna Hada Santane,” Haroon Lanthra is known for “Hansa Rani” (also sung with Sujatha Attanayake), the tender “Hada Mal Pandure,” and “Mage Namali.” His duets with Sujatha Attanayake form the core of his legacy, songs that have been kept alive on Sinhala oldies compilations and in chord and lyric collections online.
For the Sri Lankan diaspora and lovers of older Sinhala film music, Harun Lanthra represents a quieter, melody-first style of singing from a formative period of the island’s popular music. Lyrics-lk presents these songs with their Sinhala lyrics, transliteration, and English translation so the meaning carries to a bilingual audience.
