A woman is calling out to the one she loves, the man she calls her lord, because she can see him being pulled toward something that will hurt him. The whole song is a warning wrapped in tenderness. She watches him drift down a dark path lined with temptations, and all she wants is for him to find his way back to her before he is lost.

The danger she describes is dressed up to look beautiful, which is what makes it so dangerous. She calls it a “cheap smile” that stirs up the mind, the kind of shallow, flattering attention that unsettles you and pulls you off course. Then comes the sharpest image in the song: bees with their stingers out and their fangs full of poison. In Sinhala lyric the bee usually drifts toward a flower for its sweetness, so turning the bee into something that stings and poisons flips that gentleness on its head. What looks inviting, a flower blooming and swaying on the road, is really a trap. She is telling him that the sweetness he is being offered is laced with venom.

The most loaded line is the one about the smile that “isn’t the maidens of the gods.” When the splendour of some heavenly-seeming world opens up in front of him, all glittering and strange, she insists it only looks divine. The smile drawing him in is not the smile of celestial maidens, it is something far more ordinary and far more deceptive, an illusion dressed as paradise. She is begging him not to mistake a beautiful trick for the real thing, and to shut his eyes against it.

What gives the song its ache is how she ends every plea. Stay, my lord. Come, my lord. The fire in her own chest would finally go out if only he came back to her. Her warning isn’t cold or scolding. It is love, frightened for him, and quietly burning for him at the same time.
