Kumarasiri Pathirana (කුමාරසිරි පතිරණ) is a Sri Lankan singer, songwriter and composer who was a familiar voice on the Sinhala popular-music scene, especially through the 1980s. What set his work apart is that he often wrote the words and set them to melody himself, so many of his best-loved songs are his own from lyric to tune.
Pathirana built his early reputation as a band musician, performing for around a dozen years as a permanent member of groups such as Super Friends and Silver Stone. That stage grounding fed into a catalogue of romantic Sinhala songs that kept him in steady rotation on radio and at live shows. In 1986 he staged his own solo concert, Kumara Geeth, an evening built around his singing.
His most enduring numbers are gentle love songs whose first lines fans still recognise instantly. Innam Itin Ma Sada Kal, Sithin Patha Innam and Punchi Puthu Mage are among the titles most closely tied to his name. As both lyricist and composer he also wrote the longer version Sithin Patha Innam Kuludul Pem Pathuman, and he contributed words to songs recorded by other artists, including Chamara Thusitha.
Pathirana is something of an all-rounder. Alongside his music he has written and published Sinhala children’s storybooks and novels, including the work Piwithuru Hada Langa (පිවිතුරු හද ළඟ), extending the same plain, sentimental voice from song into prose.
