Dushan Jayathilake (also spelled Dushan Jayathilaka), දුෂාන් ජයතිලක, is a Sri Lankan keyboardist, songwriter, composer, and music arranger whose recordings include Mal Osariya and the remake of Oba Dutu E Mul Dine. Across a career of more than 25 years he has been both a sought-after studio arranger and, in a smaller body of original work, a singer of his own songs.
Dushan Jayathilake built his reputation largely on stage. He joined The Gypsies, one of Sri Lanka’s longest-running bands, in 2004 and spent close to two decades as their keyboardist, performing and directing music under the band’s founders. Touring across many countries shaped a broad sense of world-music tones, and he was among the first in the Sri Lankan industry to play the Roli Seaboard.
Beyond his own band work, Dushan Jayathilaka has arranged and produced for a range of well-known Sri Lankan artists, including Bathiya and Santhush and Chamara Weerasinghe. He also co-leads the band project LunuDehi.
Alongside his arranging, Dushan released a handful of original songs that he both wrote and performed. Mal Osariya (මල් ඔසරිය), the love song that opens “Mal Osariya dakka data sudu manike,” is the best known, and Tharu Pata Nilata Dilisena, a duet with Uresha Ravihari, sits among his recognizable recordings. His remake of the older favourite “Oba Dutu E Mul Dine” reintroduced the melody to a newer audience.
For listeners searching the Jayathilaka spelling, the same artist’s Sinhala lyrics, transliteration, and English translation are gathered on these pages, which give the meaning of each song rather than the words alone.
