Father of the World
ocean of virtue, Father of the World
we worship you, bowing our heads in devotion
on this Vesak Poya day

the day all three worlds

The whole world lit up as one
countless festivities were held
even the fires of hell did not burn

This is a Vesak hymn, sung to the Buddha as “Lo Piya,” the Father of the World, an “ocean of virtue” before whom the devotees bow their heads. It is built around the single most important fact of Vesak: that one full-moon day, te magula, the “thrice-blessed day,” holds three of the greatest events in the Buddhist story, and the song gives one verse to each.

The first verse is the birth. On the day the Buddha was born, “the whole world lit up as one,” festivities broke out everywhere, and in a famous image of cosmic compassion “even the fires of hell did not burn,” suffering itself pausing at his arrival. The second verse is the enlightenment: the day he “became the Buddha,” the darkness of delusion was dispelled, the Four Noble Truths were revealed, and the weight of worldly suffering was eased, a blessing to all “three worlds.”

The third verse turns to loss, the parinibbana, his final passing. Here the imagery reverses: “the great earth trembled, the darkness of sorrow deepened, the world was made helpless.” Yet even in that grief there is quiet consolation, because “the true Dhamma was left” behind, the teaching remaining after the teacher is gone. What the listener is left with is the full arc of Vesak in one song, wonder at his birth, gratitude for his awakening, and sorrow at his passing, all offered up in devotion to the Father of the World.
