Saman Lenin (සමන් ලෙනින්), born Kottawa Iniyage Saman Thusitha Lenin Kumara, is a Sri Lankan vocalist and ethno-musicologist known for drawing village folk idioms into contemporary Sinhala song. He is regarded as one of the country’s leading interpreters of traditional folk material, and several of his recordings sit at the meeting point of ritual chant, folk melody, and modern arrangement.
Saman Lenin was born on 1 May 1980 in Kottawa, a village near Unawatuna in the Galle District of southern Sri Lanka. His grounding in folk performance and Indian classical music shaped a singing style rooted in oral village tradition rather than studio pop, which became his distinguishing mark once he began recording.
He came to wider notice after placing second in Rajatha Rashmi, a televised music contest on the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, and has been active as a recording and concert artist since the mid-2000s. His best-known release is Amude (also styled Ambude or “Vas Geeya”), a folk-derived song that became one of his signature numbers. He also recorded Ambaruwo (Kale Hadena Kiri Madu Wal), associated with the historical film Siri Parakum.
Saman Lenin’s work foregrounds folk texture, traditional percussion, and the cadence of village song, which has earned him a steady following among listeners drawn to Sri Lankan roots music. He has been recognised at the Sumathi Awards and the State Television Awards for his vocal work. For each title above, Lyrics-lk presents the Sinhala lyrics alongside English transliteration and translation, so diaspora listeners can follow both the words and their meaning.
